Manuscript copy, in a single hand, of the six instructions drafted by the Marquês de Pombal, prime minister to King Joseph I, for Dom Francisco d'Assumpção e Brito, who was appointed Archbishop of Goa at the end of 1773. The instructions concern the proper administration of archepiscopal property, particularly the recently-confiscated Jesuit foundations; the abolition of the distinction between cristãos velhos and cristãos novos and the creation of opportunities for ordained Indians; the necessity for cooperation between the secular and regular clergy, and the lack of cooperation formerly shown by the Jesuits; and the Archbishop's duty to uphold the claims of the Padroado Regio against the "pertendidos missionarios" of the Congregation de Propaganda Fide.
